Winter 2012

WARREN KING, L.AC.

Greeting Friends,

Do you know the root of the word Doctor doesnot mean healer but rather teacher. So I am getting inner direction to start doing more teaching. I will begin by sending out this newsletter more often.

I’ll share with you what I am learning by treating thousands of patients as well as what I am learning on the internet, in magazines, books, CD’s and continuing education. I’ll also pass on information that I’mgetting from my own intuition.

In my own life I have added silent meditation to my practice, and spend about 15 minutes every other day before bed in meditation. I also have enlisted the help of apersonal trainer and am really pushing myself with a work out about every other day. Not only do I feel more clear and energized, I feel I can hold more Light in my aura. So why don’t you give meditation and exercise a try!

Symptom Suppression

In Japan there is a saying. “Where there is a front, there is a back. The bigger the front, the bigger the back.” Walk into any drug store or supermarket and you will find shelf after shelf of bottles for every symptom under the sun: headaches, pain, sleeping, allergies, congestion, coughs, skin eruptions, etc.. . Prescription drugs can even be more effective at suppressing symptoms than the over the counter drugs. That is the front, your symptom diminishes. Way down the line you may be diagnosed with cancer, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis or obesity. That is the back. The stronger and longer the suppression, the worse you may feel later on.

The body has an innate intelligence. It knows what is toxic and seeks to expel it from the body. A baby will get a rash, or runny nose. If suppressed with cortisone cream or anti-congestant, then the symptom may clear, but in a year, seemingly out of the blue they now have asthma. More cortisone and more antibiotics, then they have attention problems…more drugs. The body is never let to have a good fever to burn out toxins and bugs, due to aspirin. If suppressed enough the body will stop discharging toxins and start storing them away. The body has priorities, protect the main organs like the brain and heart, so it may stuff gunk into the gall bladder or uterus, which are often removed. Fat cells are a convenient place to store unwanted toxins. If the inside of the cells become toxic, then you may get auto-immune diseases or cancer.

After decades of suppression they may end up on my table. My forte is to be able to communicate with the intelligence of the body. I have many fine remedies that can open the elimination organs to start effectively eliminating toxins. Some homeopathics can even get inside the cells and help them eliminate things like mercury or lead. If you don’t open the doors (elimination organs like skin, intestines, kidneys and liver) first then you could feel worse before you feel better as the toxins are eliminated from the cells and organs. But I minimize this with a system called drainage (opening the elimination organs).

Toxins have often built up over years and decades, so healing proceeds like the peeling of an onion, in layers. Often after these layers of toxins are eliminated, we find at the core an emotional or spiritual blockage. When these are cleared, healing is mostly complete. We may add some items for rebuilding like vitamins, minerals or essential fatty acids. At this point the person is at a level of homeostasis and balance where they feel good. They know what foods help and hinder them and find their own limits. They have good emotional and spiritual hygiene, such as not holding on to grudges or not over giving.

It is so satisfying to work with people as they learn to truly heal at a deep level and regain their zest for life. We have this one body to work with in this life, so let’s make it as healthy as possible that it can be a dependable vehicle for our soul for as long as possible.

Taking Care of Your Adrenal Gland

We don’t often think about our adrenal glands, but having healthy adrenals is really a key for feeling well. These walnut sized glands sit atop our kidneys. They have a lot to do with controlling of other glands and hormones of the body. The outer layer or cortex produces hormones such as testosterone, estrogen, DHEA and cortisol. The central portion produces adrenaline, which is used in the fight or flight response.

Under stress your heart rate and blood pressure increase, your energy stores are ready for immediate use and your digestion slows. Your senses are also sharpened. This is healthy response to stress in an emergency. But in modern society stress can become an ongoing state of affairs. When we don’t get enough sleep, when there are financial pressures, relationship issues, and a reliance on caffeine and simple carbs for energy our adrenals can become fatigued.

In oriental medicine what we think of as adrenals was considered part of the kidney energy system. Symptoms of deficient kidneys are what you may consider as old age symptoms like graying or losing hair, weakening of bones or teeth, low back pain, memory loss, sleeping poorly, low sexual energy and sensitivity to cold.

It was thought that the kidney/adrenal energy could especially be healed during the winter. I’m concerned that with our lack of a real winter this year, the energy is not going deeper in the body to replenish the kidneys, like a tree trying to bud when it should be storing up nutrients in it’s roots.

Fear and anxiety are the emotions generated by an imbalanced kidney/ adrenal energy. But also being in a state of fear can weaken those organs.

A sauna can warm up the kidneys, as can a compress over the kidneys made of strong ginger tea. Silent meditation or mindfulness, just being in the present moment, without mental chatter, can be very useful in reducing stress.

There are many herbs that help the adrenals as well such as ginseng, schizandra, rhodiola, turmeric, astragalus, galanga and ginger. These are found in a product I often use called “Adrenal Balance”. Some foods that can help the kidneys are the high protein grain quinoa, burdock root, kale, azuki beans, tempeh, sea vegetables, green tea, olive oil, and miso soup. Try to enjoy what’s left of our deficient winter without kidney/adrenal deficiency.
