The Danger of Non-Stick Pans (Teflon)

Teflon fumes may be dangerous to your health Non stick pans seem nice as the food doesn’t stick. There is just one drawback; non-stick pans may be hazardous to one's health -- not, as you may think, due to chipping, but to fumes. When non-stick pans are heated to high temperatures, the coating breaks down and vaporizes, releasing toxic substances into the air. DuPont, the maker of Teflon, admits as much, only the company claims that temperatures must exceed 500° F for "deterioration" to occur, and 660° F for "significant decomposition." According to DuPont, temperatures don't even get to 500° F in the course of "normal" cooking, except in the broiler. Au contraire, says the Environmental Working Group.
